Personal Digital Devices
A personal digital device is any privately owned digital device that is not part of a school-approved bring your own device (BYOD) programme. This includes cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, laptops, handheld PCs and consoles, portable music players, e-readers, and other similar devices.
Te Kura o Mangateretere does not recommend that students bring personal digital devices to school. These are not necessary to have during the day. However, we understand that some parents like their children to have a device to communicate with them after school.
If a student does bring a personal digital device to school, the following guidelines apply:
Students must hand their device into the office at the beginning of the day and can collect the device at the end of the day.
The school does not accept responsibility for lost, damaged, or stolen personal digital devices.
If personal digital devices are used for a learning activity, this will be at the teacher's discretion, and their use is supervised by school staff.
Inappropriate Use
If a student is observed using a personal digital device inappropriately, the student must hand it to a staff member immediately when asked. If possible, students should lock their device before handing it to staff. The device will be kept in the office and can be collected by the student at the end of the day.
Inappropriate use of a personal digital device may include:
using the device when not permitted
any sort of bullying, including online bullying, e.g. disrespectful messages about staff or other students
taking photos or videos of other people without their permission
forwarding inappropriate messages or content.
Inappropriate use of a personal digital device is dealt with through the school's behaviour management, responding to digital incidents, and surrender and retention of digital devices guidelines, as appropriate.
Online Bullying
Online bullying Incidents of online bullying or harm will not be tolerated at our school. If you or somebody else is being bullied or harmed online, it’s never okay at any time. This type of harm doesn’t usually just go away. It’s important to keep the evidence of what is happening to you or someone so this can be investigated. Don’t put yourself at further risk by continuing any contact with the person or people who are bullying online, or creating harmful or hurtful content. It’s very important to let someone at school (i.e. your teacher or office staff) know what’s happening so you can get the right help and support you need. You should also consider talking to a trusted adult like your parent, your whānau or guardian for support.
Online Safety
Online safety support Netsafe is an online safety organisation that is also available to help. They provide free confidential advice seven days a week for all online safety challenges. They can be contacted on 0508 638723 or online at https://www.netsafe.org.nz
